How Can I Help Someone?

Maybe somebody you know uses drugs or drinks too much.  It might be a parent, or a sister or a brother, or a friend.  You can find out some ways to help that person, or help yourself.

Get information.  This means, read and ask questions.  It helps to learn more about alcohol and drugs, so that you and the people you know can stay safe and drug-free.

Ask for help! Sometimes , people are embarrassed to ask for help.  But asking an adult for help with a tough situation is a sign that you are strong not weak.

Things You Can Do!

If you are worried about someone who uses drugs or drinks too much, talk to somebody you can trust.   One of your parents, or an older brother, or sister, a friend, teacher, or school counselor would be a good person to talk to.

Write down the names and phone numbers of people who can help you. Know who to call, just in case.  You can call 254-718-4054 or toll free 866-3CTCADA if you are worried about someone, or just want to talk...

What Can You Do If Your Mom or Dad Drinks Too Much or Uses Drugs?

DO    Talk about how you feel.  You can talk with a safe person in your life - maybe a close friend, relative, counselor, teacher, or minister, .  When you talk to someone, you might feel less alone.

DO  Try to get involved in doing enjoyable things at school or where you live-- the school band, softball, Scouts, or others.  Doing these types of activities can help you forget about the problems.  You could learn new things about yourself and about how other people live their lives.

DO    Remember that feeling afraid and alone is a normal way to feel when someone you know is drinking or using drugs.  All people have confusing feelings: two different feelings at the same time.  This is the way many kids feel about alcoholic parents.

DO    Remember to have fun! Sometimes it is easy to forget how to be "just a kid."  If things are bad at home, you might not have anyone who will help you have fun, but don't let that stop you.  Find a way to let yourself have fun.

Don't    Ride in a car when the driver has been drinking if you can avoid it.  It is not safe.  Walk or try to get a ride with an adult friend who has not been drinking.  If you must get in the car with a drinking driver, sit in the back seat in the middle.  Lock your door.  Put on your safety belt. Try to stay calm.

Don't    Think that because your parent is an alcoholic you will be one too. Most children of alcoholics or drug abusers do not become addicted.
